The leadership of global securities regulators is undergoing a change, with both the European and Australian authorities facing new chiefs.

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) launched a process today for naming a new chair to replace its outgoing head, Verena Ross, whose term ends Oct. 31.

Based in Paris, the chair of ESMA heads the strategic direction for the European Union’s financial markets regulator and supervisor; serves as the point person with other global regulators; and will lead the organization through policymakers’ ongoing efforts to further integrate Europe’s capital markets.

“This key leadership role offers the opportunity to shape the future of Europe’s financial markets and steer the organization through an evolving regulatory and supervisory landscape,” the regulator said in a release.

The deadline for applying to that role is March 3.

At the same time, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) announced that Sarah Court, the regulator’s deputy chair, will take over as chair of the ASIC on June 1.

“Sarah is an exceptional regulator with a strong record in enforcement that demonstrates her integrity and impact. Her work as ASIC’s deputy chair has been instrumental to the success of the agency’s structural transformation that has strengthened our enforcement posture and work, leading to better outcomes for consumers and a fairer financial system,” said outgoing chair, Joe Longo, in a release.
