The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has formed an internal group to monitor the effects of the Covid-19 outbreak on the markets and investors, and to coordinate the regulator’s responses.

The SEC announced the creation of its Covid-19 Market Monitoring Group, made up of representatives from various branches of the SEC. The group is being chaired by the SEC’s chief economist, S.P. Kothari.

“The importance of understanding what is happening in the markets is greater than ever,” Kothari said in a statement. “Collaboration both within the SEC and with our regulator colleagues is vital to this effort.”

The group will also serve as a liaison with other regulators and agencies, including the Financial Stability Board, the U.S. Financial Stability Oversight Council and the President’s Working Group on Financial Markets.
