Industry applauds Sousa’s regulatory proposals

The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) on Wednesday unveiled the membership of its new seniors expert advisory committee (SEAC), which includes investor advocates, eldercare experts and industry representatives.

The committee advises OSC staff on policy and operational issues that impact older investors, and provides input on the regulator’s education and outreach activities.

The inaugural edition of the committee features investor advocates such as Neil Gross, executive director of the Canadian Foundation for Advancement of Investor Rights; Alan Goldhar, a former member of the OSC’s Investor Advisory Panel; Wanda Morris, chief operating officer and vice president of advocacy for CARP; and Marta Hajek, director of operations with Elder Abuse Ontario.

From the investment industry, the committee includes Jan Dymond, vice president public affairs at the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC) and chairwoman of IFIC’s vulnerable investors task force; Patricia Kloepfer, vice president of compliance and chief compliance officer for Investors Group; and Lindsay Rogan, managing director, Portfolio Management Association of Canada.

A variety of experts on seniors issues are also represented, including Dr. Amanda Grenier, associate professor at McMaster University’s Department of Health, Aging and Society; Dr. Samir Sinha, director of geriatrics for the Sinai Health System and University Health Network Hospitals; Greg Shaw, director of international and corporate relations for the International Federation on Ageing; Bonnie Rose, CEO and registrar for the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority; and Patricia Fleischmann, co-chair of the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly’s Law and Aging Theme Team.

A handful of veteran lawyers round out the group, including Ellen Bessner from Babin Bessner Spry LLP; Arthur Fish, a lawyer with over 25 years of experience working with elderly clients; and Laura Tamblyn Watts, a lawyer who focuses on elder law issues.

The committee is chaired by Tyler Fleming, director of the OSC’s Investor Office, and is slated to meet four to six times per year.
