(September 27 – 11:30 ET) –
Finance Minister Paul Martin has
been chosen as the first chair of
the Group of Twenty (G-20), a new
international group of finance
ministers and central bankers
representing 18 countries, the
European Union and the
International Monetary Fund and
World Bank.
The G-20 is designed to increase
emerging economies’ participation
in international financial
affairs.
“The G-20’s work will focus on
translating the benefits of
globalization into higher incomes
and better opportunities for
people everywhere,” said Martin.
“Its creation responds to Canada’s
calls for a more inclusive and
representative forum to help
accomplish these goals.”
Martin will chair the group for
two years. It first meets in Berlin
in December, with Canada hosting
the next meeting in 2000.
