Wholesale sales edged up 0.2% in August to $48.4 billion.
Increases were reported in all subsectors except the miscellaneous, and the building material and supplies subsectors.
By volume, wholesale sales fell 0.9% in August.
The agency says the difference between growth rates reflects higher prices for imported products sold by wholesalers, partly attributable to depreciation of the Canadian dollar.
Five of seven subsectors, representing close to 75% of total sales, reported increases.
The largest growth in dollar terms came in the machinery, equipment and supplies subsector, where sales rose 0.7% to $10.5 billion.
The largest decline came in the miscellaneous subsector (down 1.1%).
The food, beverages and tobacco products subsector (up 0.5%) continued an upward trend that began in late 2009.
Sales in the motor vehicle and parts subsector gained 0.4%.
