Orders placed with U.S. factories fell for the second consecutive month in September, the U.S. Commerce Department said today.

Factory orders slipped 0.4%, or US$1.3 billion, in September to US$368.3 billion, following a decrease of 0.3% in August that reversed a months-long trend of increases. They were the first back-to-back declines since November and December of 2002.

Economists had expected a 0.5% increase.
