The Toronto Stock Exchange’s main index finished flat Thursday after a rollercoaster ride punctuated by BCE shares sinking following a court decision in favour of bondholders.

The S&P/TSX composite index closed up just 1.99 points, or 0.01%, at 14,792.36, as seven of the ten major TSX groups gained ground..

The financials group helped buoy markets, closing up 1.49% for the day.

TD Bank Financial shares gained $1.39, or 2.07%, to end at $68.49 while Royal Bank of Canada stock closed up 99¢, or 2%, to close at $50.40.

Meanwhile, the heavyweight energy group fell 1.09%.

Crude oil for July delivery closed down US$2.36, or 1.8%, at US$130.81 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, which is the contract’s first decline in seven days.

Shares in Husky Energy Inc. closed down $1.05, or 1.98%, at $51.95 while market heavyweight Encana Corp. stock ended down 67¢, or 0.72%, at $92.94.

The materials group gained 0.23%, while the gold sub-index fell 0.91%.

Gold for June delivery fell US$10.30 to end at US$918.30 an ounce on the Nymex.

Goldcorp Inc. shares closed down $1.07, or 2.53%, at $41.29 and Barrick Gold Corp. shares fell 13¢, or 0.31%, to end the session at $41.95.

The base metals sector gained 0.94% as Eastern Platinum stock fell 1¢, or 0.34%, to close at $2.93.

As well, Sherritt International Corp. shares closed up 24¢, or 1.58%, at $15.42, after the company’s CEO told shareholders the firm expects growth from its coal assets after the Royal Utilities Income Fund acquisition.

In other news, the TSX halted trading of BCE Inc. shares due to a “trading message protocol” issue earlier in the day. This came after the Quebec Court of Appeals decided the terms of the upcoming takeover deal were not fair to holders of BCE debt.

The junior S&P/TSX Venture composite index rose 8.57 points, or 0.32%, to 2,680.33.

The Canadian dollar closed at US1.0143¢.

In New York, markets were rocky but closed up as oil prices retreated from yesterday’s high.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 24.43 points, or 0.19%, at 12,625.62.

The S&P 500 closed up 3.64 points, or 0.26%, to close at 1,394.35.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq closed up 16.31 points, or 0.67%, to close at 2,464.58.
