Canada’s economy was essentially unchanged in May after edging up 0.1% in both March and April, but was up by 2.6% from May of last year.

Statistics Canada said that goods production fell 0.5% in May for a third straight month, more than offsetting a 0.2% gain in services.

The agency said that except for a slight advance in manufacturing, the main goods producing sectors of mining, oil and gas extraction and construction declined in May.

Manufacturing rose by 0.1% in May for the first gain after four months of decline.

In services, the largest gains were in wholesale trade, the financial sector and public administration, but retail trade was down.

The energy sector declined 1.5% in May after falling one% in April, and construction fell for a third consecutive month in May by 1.2%, pulled down by a 3.7% drop in residential building.

Wholesale trade was up 0.9% in May, increasing for a sixth consecutive month, the agency says.

The financial sector saw a 0.3% gain.
