CIBC has been selected for listing on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index effective September 23, 2002.

CIBC will be only the second Canadian financial services company to join the DJSI World, which tracks the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Royal Bank is also a component of DJSI World, along with 15 other Canadian firms.

CIBC was chosen because it not only achieved strong financial results for fiscal 2001, but did so while maintaining the highest levels of environmental, social and employment standards.

“CIBC is pleased to be listed alongside other world-class organizations,” said John Hunkin, chairman and CEO of CIBC, in a news release.

The DJSI World includes more than 300 companies from 23 countries — companies that, in the words of the selection committee, “lead their industry in terms of sustainability.” The results of the annual review influence the investment decisions of 40 asset managers who use the DJSI family as objective benchmarks for sustainability portfolios.

More than 2,500 companies were considered for the 2002/2003 list and selection was made by Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes, a Zurich-based cooperative firm comprising Dow Jones Indexes, STOXX Ltd. and SAM Group.
