(June 6 – 15:30 ET) – At its fifth anniversary lunch today, Connie Sugiyama, senior partner of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP and chair of WCM’s Heather L. Main Memorial Scholarship Fund, announced that Merrill Lynch Canada Inc. has pledged $250,000 to the scholarship fund over the next five years.

“Merrill Lynch is delighted to participate in the Heather L. Main Memorial Scholarship. This program mirrors our own commitment to raise the profile of women and broaden their career opportunities, both at Merrill Lynch and across Canadian capital markets,” said William D. Packham, president and COO of Merrill Lynch Canada.

Merrill’s donation to the scholarship fund raises the total amount pledged to date to almost $1.6 million. “We believe that the leadership shown by Merrill Lynch today will be a catalyst for additional investments from other institutions. We are well within sight of our fundraising goal for the scholarship endowment,” said Sugiyama.

This year’s recipients of the Heather L. Main Memorial scholarships were also announced today. Belinda Dusbaba attends the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. Hui (Helen) Zhong attends the Schulich School of Business, York University.

The scholarship fund provides a $5,000 scholarship, a summer internship in the capital markets industry, paid tuition for the Canadian Securities Course sponsored by the Canadian Securities Institute and mentorship for women enrolling in a full-time MBA program. The scholarships have initially been offered at York University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Western Ontario. When fully funded, the scholarships will be offered at other leading graduate business schools across Canada.
