The International Organization of Securities Commissions has appointed a new secretary general.

Greg Tanzer, executive director for Consumer Protection and International at the Australian Securities & Investments Commission, is taking the post. He will be responsible for leading the Organization’s General Secretariat from its Madrid office, and will take up his position in January 2008.

Jane Diplock, chair of IOSCO, said, “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Greg Tanzer as IOSCO’s new secretary general. Greg has an extensive background in domestic regulation and international regulatory co-operation throughout his career at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.”

“His leadership of the General Secretariat’s work will be crucial in coordinating and supporting the aims and activities of IOSCO going forward, particularly in helping us to react to the issues posed by today’s fast-moving global markets,” she added.

Tanzer has worked in a range of roles for the ASIC and its predecessor body, the Australian Securities Commission, since 1992. He has been involved with IOSCO for a number of years including chairing Technical Committee’s Standing Committee on Investment Management from 1997 to 2003 and currently chairs the Executive Committee’s Implementation Task Force.

Before joining ASIC, he worked in the Commonwealth attorney general’s department and the Department of Finance. He is a solicitor and barrister.
