Each week, we summarize notable moves across the financial industry.

  • Terry Shaw and Quinn Sherdahl have joined Wellington-Altus as senior wealth advisors and portfolio managers, leaving Scotia Wealth Management after two decades. They lead a team of 10, bringing $750 million in assets. Shaw has more than three decades of experience in the industry, and Sherdahl two decades. In addition, Patrice Cloutier has joined Wellington-Altus as vice-president of corporate development for Quebec. He brings 30 years of industry experience, most recently as associate vice-president (VP) of regional sales with Franklin Templeton Investments, where he’s worked for 13 years.
  • Geoff Chen has moved into an investment advisor role at TD Wealth Private Investment Advice, starting his own practice after three years as VP, high-net-worth (HNW) planning at TD Wealth. Chen joined TD in a senior role focused on HNW tax and estate planning in 2020, following tax-focused roles at Grant Thornton LLP, Best Buy Canada and MNP.
  • Justin Monahan has joined New York-headquartered BlackStone Private Wealth as a principal, after three years as VP and regional market leader with New York-based Blue Owl Capital Inc.. Monahan, who previously spent nearly 17 years in progressively senior sales roles with Russell Investments, including co-head of national sales and divisional director for Western Canada, will cover the same territory with BlackStone. He is based in Vancouver.
  • Alan Matijas has been named head of asset management and institutional client coverage, Canada, for UBS. Bringing close to 30 years of industry experience, he comes to the firm from Wellington Management, where he spent more than 17 years in managing director roles with responsibility for business development, and is credited with leading the buildout of the firm’s Canadian presence. Before that, he was VP, relationship management at TD Asset Management.
  • Jackson Lin has been named regional director at National Bank Investments. He was previously regional VP and senior consultant with Invesco Canada Ltd. and has held senior advisor-facing sales roles with Desjardins, Russell Investments and Fidelity Investments. He also headed up business development NAXex traded funds and mutual funds with the Toronto Stock Exchange.
  • Ali Jaffery has joined KPMG Canada as chief economist and partner, leaving CIBC Capital Markets after more than two years as an executive director and senior economist. Jaffrey has more than 15 years of experience, serving as an economist as the Bank of Canada and Finance Canada, and with QNB Group in Qatar.
  • Clare Morcos has been named co-head of marketing at Women in ETFs Canada. She is a national accounts and institutional sales executive at Vanguard Investments Canada Inc.
  • Sonia Baxendale will be stepping down as president and CEO of the Global Risk Institute after eight years. She will stay on while the board conducts an external search for a successor.
  • Ursula Holmsten and Jin–Young Kim have been appointed to the board of the Alberta Investment Management Corp. Holmsten served in a number of senior roles with ATB Wealth over 16 years, including CEO and chief financial officer, as well as co-CEO of ATB Securities. Kim is a partner and head of capital formation at U.S.-based technology investment firm 8VC.
