Haywood Securities Inc. has further deepened its research coverage with the addition of Joe Mazumdar to its mining research team, the independent investment dealer said Wednesday.

Mazumdar will work out of Haywood’s Vancouver office.

“Joe’s appointment highlights Haywood’s commitment to field a globally competitive and relevant team that rivals will find hard to match in terms of academic, technical and tenured experience,” says Rob Blanchard, president of Haywood.

“Joe’s academic training, global experience in mining, where he has evaluated multi-billion dollar investment decisions, and his proven track record in the industry contributes significantly to our team of extremely talented analysts, ensuring Haywood’s future in mining research as distinct.”

Having spent the last four years in financial analysis, corporate development and strategic planning for gold producer Newmont, Mazumdar has sharpened his skills as a high-caliber analyst of the precious metals market. His previous experience in commodity market analysis and trading during his tenure at Phelps Dodge speak to his depth of knowledge of the commodity sector, Haywood says.

Mazumdar brings comprehensive knowledge of gold, copper and non-ferrous metal markets as well as 13 years working as a geologist internationally for companies such as Rio Tinto (Argentina), Mount Isa Mines (Australia), North (Chile/Peru/Argentina) and Noranda (Canada) and most recently for IAMGold in Argentina and Ecuador. As a result of his seven years in South America, Joe is bilingual in Spanish.

Mazumdar graduated from the University of Alberta with a bachelor of science in geology and the James Cook University in Australia with a master of science in exploration and mining. He most recently earned a MS in mineral economics from the Colorado School of Mines in 2003. He is a member of the AusIMM and various other mining industry organizations.

Haywood Securities is a private, employee-owned investment dealer with more than 275 employees and Canadian offices in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto.
