Former chairwoman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mary Schapiro, has joined Washington, D.C.-based financial industry consulting firm Promontory Financial Group.

Schapiro, who headed the SEC between 2009 and 2012, is to become a managing director and chairman of Promontory’s governance and markets practice. She will work with clients to ensure the quality of corporate governance, and advise on risk management.

“The risk environment for firms in today’s global markets is increasingly complex,” Schapiro said. “Managing those risks while balancing the interests of the many constituencies of a modern corporation challenges practices of corporate governance, regulatory policy and market behavior.”

Schapiro was the first woman to serve as SEC chair, and is the only person to headed both the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). From 2007 to 2008 she was CEO of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Prior to joining FINRA’s predecessor, the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), she headed the CFTC. She was also an SEC commissioner, and general counsel and senior vice president for the Futures Industry Association (FIA). She began her career at the CFTC in 1980.
