Mercer Investment Consulting was honoured by the GLOBE Foundation as one of the winners of the sixth annual GLOBE Awards for Environmental Excellence.

These annual environmental awards recognize Canadian companies that have taken a proactive approach to unique environmental and sustainability challenges, while still maintaining strategic excellence in business practices.

Mercer won the Capital Markets Award for Sustainable Investment & Banking. Financial markets are increasingly integrating environment factors into investment and banking decisions, and are placing more capital into sustainable technologies and ventures. Mercer’s responsible investment business was honoured for its dedication to developing intellectual capital about the integration of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) considerations within investment decision making.

“For years, socially responsible investment and corporate environmental performance were the domain of ethical funds or special interest investors,” said Jane Ambachtsheer, global head of Mercer Investment Consulting’s responsible investment business, in a news release. “However, with the renewed focus on climate change, ESG issues are garnering more attention from the general public and mainstream investors than ever before. Financial markets have a role to play. We are pleased that our contribution is helping a growing number of investors to integrate responsible investment factors into their investment approach.”


Working with clients in Canada and abroad, Mercer helps to develop and implement responsible investment policies, select investment managers and monitor performance within an ESG framework. Mercer worked as consultants to the United Nations on the development of the Principles for Responsible Investment, which were launched in April 2006 The Principles have now been signed by 180 institutional signatories from around the globe, representing in excess of $8 trillion in assets under management.

“There is a growing body of investors who believe environmental, social and corporate governance issues can impact corporate financial performance. We are delighted with the groundbreaking work we have done to help these investors consider the issues and are adding resources to facilitate further developments in this area,” said Mercer Investment Consulting’s Canadian Business Leader, Peter Muldowney, notes

The GLOBE awards were presented to four of Canada’s most innovative and eco-friendly companies at the EECO 2007 Environment & Energy Conference closing gala luncheon in Toronto on June 20.
