New York City-based investment banking firm Jefferies Group Inc., is expanding into Canada, with the hiring of a banker to focus on the Canadian mining sector.

Jefferies said Wednesday that it has hired Steven Latimer as a managing director and head of Canadian investment banking. Initially, he will focus on the metals and mining sector.

Latimer, who will be based in Toronto, joins Jefferies from Credit Suisse, where he was head of Canadian metals and mining investment banking. Previously, he spent 15 years at UBS Securities, based in Toronto and Calgary.

“Establishing an investment banking presence in Canada is part of our strategy to expand our presence in the mining sector globally, as Canada accounts for approximately 25% of all mining investment banking worldwide,” commented Benjamin Lorello, global head of investment banking and capital markets at Jefferies.

“In addition, by having a local presence, we will be able to serve Canadian clients across all our focus sectors, providing them with M&A and worldwide capability in equity and debt capital markets through our sales and trading presence across U.S., Europe and Asia,” he added.
