The Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) on Friday announced it plans to hold roundtable meetings to discuss how market structure is impacting trading in micro-cap stocks.
Two roundtables are scheduled: in Vancouver on June 13 and in Toronto on June 15.
“The roundtables will provide stakeholders with the opportunity to present their analysis of specific current market structure issues affecting this sector of the Canadian equities market and offer opinions about appropriate regulatory responses for discussion,” IIROC says in a notice announcing the initiative.
The self-regulatory organization (SRO) expects this “will lead to better-informed policy development.”
The items up for discussion may include short selling, settlement, tick size, electronic trading, and day trading, among other things.
Ahead of the sessions, IIROC is calling on prospective presenters to submit written proposals outlining specific issues for discussion. Those proposals are due by May 6.
“Proposals will be selected to ensure that the participants reflect a diversity of views and issues to enable a balanced discussion,” the IIROC notice says.
The roundtables will only be open to presenters and regulators, but the SRO indicates that it will publish both a summary of the roundtable discussions, and a summary of all proposals received.
