Taxpayers in Quebec will be able to deduct donations to Haitian earthquake relief efforts from their 2009 income, Raymond Bachand, Quebec’s finance minister announced Friday.

As an exceptional measure to support assistance to Haiti, mechanisms will be set up to enable Quebecers who make donations to charities to assist victims of the earthquake between January 12 and February 28, to deduct hose contributions on their 2009 tax returns.

“So far Quebecers have been very generous towards the people of Haiti. With this measure, we want to encourage this upsurge of solidarity for a population in great need,” Bachand said in a release.
