A Chicago investor has amended his claim against Toronto law firm Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP, its former managing partner, Gregory Peebles and their former client, Robert Hryniak, for losses arising out of a fraudulent investment scheme.
On March 7, 2005, Bruno Appliance and Furniture Inc. of Chicago, filed a lawsuit in Ontario Superior Court against Cassels Brock, Peebles and Hryniak.
In the original claim, the allegations against Peebles were based on his role as a facilitator as opposed to an active participant in a fraudulent scheme. However, further investigation into the matter has prompted that Bruno amend its statement of claim to allege that Peebles, while a senior partner at Cassels Brock, was an active participant and co-conspirator in the investment scheme.
Bruno alleges that both Hryniak and Peebles conspired with Robert Cranston in securing investors for the bank scheme. Cranston has already been charged by the RCMP and the Ontario Securities Commission for a similar scheme.
