The Ontario Securities Commission announced Tuesday the appointment of veteran securities lawyer Leslie Byberg as executive director and chief administrative officer, effective immediately.

As head of staff at the OSC, Byberg oversees the regulator’s 480 employees and manages its day-to-day operations. She replaces Maureen Jensen, who became chairwoman and chief executive officer of the commission earlier this year.

“Leslie Byberg is a regulatory leader with over twenty years of experience in the capital markets and significant securities expertise,” says Jensen in a statement announcing the appointment.

“Having worked alongside Leslie for many years, I’ve appreciated her strong commitment to our mandate as well as her deep understanding of our regulatory and operational work,” Jensen adds.

Byberg has been with the OSC since 2003, including stints as director of the commission’s investment funds branch, director of corporate finance, and most recently as director of its strategy and operations branch. Among other things, in her time at the OSC, she led the mystery shop research into retail investment advice that concluded last year, and oversaw a recent review of the fixed income market.

Before joining the OSC, Byberg was senior counsel at the fund industry trade association, the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC). She also worked at several securities law firms, specializing in investment funds.
