Toronto stocks moved lower Monday, as falling energy stocks moved the broader market lower in a relatively quiet trading day. U.S. markets were closed for Presidents’ Day.

The S&P/TSX composite index fell 20.40 points, or 0.15%, to 13,291.55.

Six of the 10 TSX main groups finished higher, but the energy index fell 0.80%.

April Brent crude futures in London fell 41¢ to US$58.54 a barrel.

Nexen Inc. lost 55¢, or 0.78%, to $70.06.

The materials index gained 0.06%, while gold gained 0.22%. Bullion gained $5.65 to US$670.75 an ounce in London trading.

Barrick Gold gained 23¢, or 0.63%, to $36.61.

Financials ended the day essentially flat, up 0.01%.

Royal Bank gained 5¢, or 0.09%, to $54.63.

The Canadian dollar was down 0.10 of a cent to US85.88¢.

The S&P/TSX Venture composite index gained 32.23 points, or 1.04%, to 3,122.93.
