The Toronto Stock Exchange January reported equity volume of 5.2 billion shares, valued at $57 billion, for the month of January. The benchmark S&P/TSX composite index finished January at 6,569.49, down 45.05 points from December.

Equity volume in January 2003 jumped 57.4% from a year ago. Average daily volume during the month was 237.4 million shares, also up 57.4% from a year ago.

During the month the most active issues was Nortel Networks with over 917 million shares traded. Kinross Gold and Bombardier, the next two most active issues, saw over 139 million and 136 million shares traded, respectively. The total number of companies listed on the TSX fell to 1,296 in January, down from 1,309 in January 2002. However, the total number of issues listed rose to 1,640 from 1,641 a year ago.

January brought four new listings, up from three a year ago. The new listings were: Burmis Energy (BME); Clear Energy (CEN); Ranchgate Energy (ROG); and Triple G Systems Group (TGG)
