(March 23 – 15:00 ET) – Today the TSE 300 Index broke through 10,000 for
the first time ever. At 2:00pm, the benchmark index reached an intra-day high
of 10014.86. Here are some key TSE Index Milestones:
> January 3, 1977 — First day close of 1012.10
> January 30, 1980 — First close above 2000
> March 20, 1986 — First close above 3000
> July 29, 1987 — First close above 4000
> February 1, 1996 — First close above 5000
> November 28, 1996 — First close above 6000
> September 22, 1997 — First close above 7000
> December 16, 1999 — First close above 8000
> February 4, 2000 — First close above 9000
> March 23, 2000 — First time trading above 10,000.
In 2000, the average daily value of TSE trading has exceeded $3 billion. The year 2000 has been significant on a number of fronts for the TSE. In addition to reaching 10,000, the TSE 300 also broke the 9,000 barrier on February 4, 2000. TSE trading records have been smashed for:
> Daily Volume – 326.5 million shares on February 17
> Daily Value – $6.08 billion on March 17th
> Daily Transactions – 249,722 on March 6
> Monthly Value – $87.5 billion in February
These are all significant events as the TSE heads down the road to demutualization. It is expected this will become effective in early April and the TSE will officially become Toronto Stock Exchange Inc. — a for-profit corporation.
