(March 23 – 17:30 ET) North American markets jumped, with a broad base of sectors carrying indices to new heights.
The TSE cracked the 10,000 mark for the first time, before finally finishing up 118.5 to 9990.1. Ten of 15 subsectors rose, led again by the industrial products and the utilites sectors, where Nortel and BCE reside. BCE put on C$2.95 to $191.45 and Nortel drove up $3.95 to 201.25 on heavy volume. TD also carried the financial services sector upwards, adding 70 cents to $38.40.
The CDNX climbed as well, led by the oil and gas sector. Cubacan Explorations added 50% to 12 cents. Rocca Resources charged up by 22% to $2.45.
The S&P 500 closed 26.71 higher, ending the day on a record 1,527.35. The Dow flew up by 253 to 11,119.86, and Nasdaq added 75.94 to 4,940.69.
The optimism was led by news that Microsoft is close to settling its antitrust suit with the U.S. Department of Justice. The software company added US$8 5/8 to $111 7/8. Cisco Systems also jumped by 5 5/8 to 77 13/16 after its stock split. GE climbed by $5 to $86 3/4 after a Lehman Brothers analyst up-graded its stock, and also on rumours than NewCorp would by the company, an idea which NewCorp described as “without merit.”
