The Toronto Stock Exchange enjoyed broad-based gains Monday as every sector closed higher. The S&P/TSX composite index rose 56.59 points to close at 8,695.20.

The gains were led by gold, health care, energy, and mining. All told, six of the 13 TSX sectors gained at least 1%.

Alcan shares rose 22¢ to $58.20 after it reported higher-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings.

Moore Wallace shares tumbled almost 10% to $23.49 after the company said its CFO has been suspended with pay for allegedly mis-dating a document. The company said the incident would not have any affect on its financials.

Open Text shares rose $1.61 to $38.46; Angiotech Pharma shares climbed $1.661 to $38.61.

Tech bellwether Nortel gained 3¢ to $10.48.

Golds rose on the strength of an increase in bullion futures. Gold futures rose US$3.20 an ounce to US$406.80 in New York. Barrick Gold rose 44¢ to $27.69; Meridian Gold added 16¢ to $18.02.

Bema Gold climbed 15¢ to $4.70 after it said its 2004 production would be 20% higher than 2003’s.

The junior TSX Venture composite index added 34.22 points to 1,851.95.

On Wall Street, markets finished weaker on a dearth of economic or corporate news, and attention focused to a speech later in the week by U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 14 points to close at 10,579.03. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 3.44 points to 2,060.57. The broader S&P 500 edged 2.95 points lower to 1,139.81

The Canadian dollar was down 0.06¢ to US75.30¢.
