(July 11 – 16:30 ET) – The TSE had a big day as, the TSE 300 composite tacked on a healthy 114.91 points. In fact, trading had hit an intraday record high of 10,386.29 early on but backed off to finish at 10,350.30.

All of the sub-indices finished up except for two, communications and real estate. Leading the climb up were golds and metals, up 2.46% and 4.59% respectively.

Even with the broad-based advance, the market narrowed as declining issues outpaced advancing issues 543 to 520.

In individual issues, JDS was one of the most active again today. It shed $9.95 as some analysts are worried about anti-trust action the wake of JDS’s aggressive acquisition strategy of late.

Laidlaw Inc. was off 3.66% today on earnings news. On the upside, Diamondworks was up an astonishing 33.33%. No news on that one. CanOxy was also up 2.80% on news that it is experiencing record earnings, a result of current oil prices. Net income has climbed from 1¢ per share to $1.12 per share over the course of the last year.

On the downside, the CDNX was down 29.10 points at 3,372.99. Volume was heavy at 35.7 million shares.

There wasn’t much news in Alan Greenspan’s speech this morning about interest rates or markets. One interesting note, though, Greenspan said he thought worker insecurity might be one of the factors keeping inflation in check. Illuminating the downside of the knowledge economy, Greenspan suggested many workers feel their jobs are in danger because of techno-obslesence and don’t want to jeopardize them by asking for more money.

Tech stocks ended the day a bit soft. Most attributed the flaccid performance to some jitters in front of Amazon’s earnings announcement, scheduled for today after the markets close.

That tech-weakness pushed the NASDAQ composite into the red, it ended the day down 23.91 points at 3,956.38 points.

No such worries, though, in blue-chips. The old-economy pushed the Dow up 80.61 points for a finish of 10,727.19 points. The S&P 500 was up 5.26 point to close at 1,480.88.

Most market watchers seem to be looking forward to earnings season and good news now that the negative pre-announcements are out of the way. Alcoa was a big mover again on its positive earnings, the first of the big Dow industrials to report.

VoiceStream data was up 12% on news that Deutsche Telekom, evidently busy buying just about everything, had made an acquisition bid.
