On Monday, Statistics Canada releases data on new motor vehicle sales for July, which are expected to decrease 0.3% from the previous month.

On Tuesday, StatsCan reports on manufacturing shipments for July. Economists expect an increase of 1%.

On Wednesday, StatsCan reports on Canada’s international securities transactions for July. A net inflow of $5.4 billion is forecast.

On Thursday, StatsCan reports on the leading indicators for August. No change is expected.

Separately, the government agency releases wholesale sales figures for July. A 0.5% increase is forecast.

South of the border

On Monday, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board reports on industrial production and capacity utilization in August. Industrial production is forecast to fall 0.3%, and a capacity utilization rate of 79.6% is expected.

On Tuesday, the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee announces its decision on U.S. interest rates. It is widely expected to leave the key federal funds rate unchanged at 2%.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Labour Department reports on the consumer price index for August. Economists forecast no monthly gain, compared with a 0.8% rise a month earlier, and growth of 5.5% over 12 months. Excluding food and energy, respective increases of 0.2% and 2.6% are expected.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Commerce Department is scheduled to release data on the current account balance for the second quarter. Economists expect a deficit of US$179.7 billion, compared with a deficit of $176.4 billion in the second quarter.

Separately, Commerce releases housing starts and building permits figures for April.

On Thursday, the U.S. Labour Dept. reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended Sept. 13. Economists forecast 440,000 claims, down from 445,000 a week earlier. Continuing claims for the week ended Sept. 6 are expected at 3.55 million.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Conference Board reports on the leading indicators in August. Economists expect a decrease of 0.2%.

On Monday, Kroger Co. releases second-quarter results.

On Tuesday, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. reports its third-quarter results, as does Adobe Systems.

Best Buy Co. Ltd. releases second-quarter results.

On Wednesday, General Mills Inc. releases first-quarter results.

On Thursday, Sceptre Investment Counsel releases third-quarter results, as does ConAgra Foods.

FedEx Corp. posts its first-quarter results as does Palm Inc.

Pier 1 Imports reports its second-quarter results.
