Market watchers will be looking to this week’s U.S. inflation numbers to see how higher energy costs are affecting prices in the world’s largest economy.

The U.S. Department of Labour will release the July consumer price index on Tuesday. Economists are looking for a 0.4% gain for the month.

Stripping out the more volatile prices for food and energy, prices are seen advancing a more modest 0.2% in the month.

“Higher gasoline prices will boost the headline CPI in July, but in keeping with past experience, we don’t expect it to materially feed through to core prices,” said Beata Caranci, an economist at Toronto-Dominion Bank, in a written commentary.

Here at home, Statistics Canada releases its monthly survey of manufacturing for June on Monday. Economists expect a rise of 0.5% in shipments.

Separately, StatsCan releases new motor vehicle sales data for June. Economists expect an increase of 7%.

On Wednesday, the government agency releases wholesale trade figures for June. Economists expect an increase of 0.7%.

On Thursday, Statistics Canada releases data on Canada’s international transactions in securities for June, as well as figures on travel between Canada and other countries during the month.

Canada’s central bank releases the Bank of Canada review.

South of the border, the U.S. Department of Commerce releases building permits and housing starts data for July on Tuesday. Economists expect 2.11 million and 2.02 million, respectively.

As well, the U.S. Federal Reserve releases industrial production and capacity utilization numbers. Economists expect an increase of 0.5% in industrial production and capacity utilization of 80.3%.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Labor releases producer price index figures for July. Economists expect a rise of 0.5%, with the core rate gaining 0.1%.

About 78% of the S&P/TSX 60 had reported as of the middle of this past week.

On the earnings front, Goldcorp Inc. is one of the few Canadian companies set to report this week. It reports its second quarter results on Monday.

On Tuesday, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Home Depot Inc. will round out the Dow Jones industrial average’s second-quarter reporting season.
