A full U.S. economic calendar and a flood of U.S. earnings means much to the week’s action will take place south of the border.

On Monday, the Bank of Canada releases it Business Outlook Survey.

The Conference Board of Canada releases the winter edition of the Canadian Outlook on Tuesday, and the winter edition of U.S. Outlook on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Statistics Canada posts data on international securities transactions for November. Economists expect a net inflow of $3.3 billion.

On Friday, StatsCan reports on manufacturing shipments for November. Economists expect an increase of 0.3%.

South of the border

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Labor reports on the producer price index for December. Economists expect a 0.2% increase.

The U.S. Department of Commerce reports advance retail sales for December. Economists expect an increase of 0.1%.

Separately, Commerce reports on business inventories for November. An increase of 0.4% is expected.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Labor Department reports on the consumer price index for December. Economists expect a rise in the inflation indicator of 0.2% from the previous month.

The U.S. Federal Reserve Board reports on industrial production and capacity utilization in December. Economists expect production to slip 0.1% from the previous month, and capacity utilization at 81.3%.

On Thursday, the U.S. Commerce Department reports on housing starts and building permits for December. Annualized starts are expected to come in at 1.15 million, and permits at 1.138 million.

Meanwhile, U.S. Labor Department reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended Jan. 12. Economists forecast 335,000 claims.

On Friday, the University of Michigan issues its preliminary consumer sentiment index for January. Economists expect a reading of 75.

As wlel, the U.S. Conference Board reports on the leading indicators for December. Economists expect a drop of 0.1%.

U.S. bond markets close early, at 14:00 ET, ahead of Monday’s Martin Luther King Day holiday.

Corporate earnings

The U.S. results season shifts into top gear with Genentech on Monday, Citigroup, Intel and U.S. Bancorp on Tuesday, AMR Corp and J.P. Morgan on Wednesday, IBM and Merrill Lynch on Thursday and General Electric and Schlumberger on Friday.

Among Canadian companies, Astral Media Inc. reports first-quarter results on Monday.

Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Inc., operating as Viterra, reports results of a special fifth quarter on Friday.
