On Thursday, Statistics Canada reports on international merchandise trade in December. Economists expect a surplus of $3.6 billion.

On Friday, StatsCan reports on manufacturing shipments in December. Economists expect a drop of 0.1%.

South of the border

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Commerce reports advance retail sales for January. Economists expect a drop of 0.2%.

Separately, U.S. Commerce reports on business inventories for December. Economists expect an increase of 0.4%.

On Thursday, the U.S. Commerce Department reports on the trade balance data for December. A deficit of US$61.1 billion is expected.

As well, the U.S. Department of Labor reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended February 9. Economists forecast 343,000 claims.

On Friday, the U.S. Federal Reserve reports on industrial production in January. Economists expect in increase of 0.1%.

Meanwhile, the University of Michigan issues its preliminary index of consumer sentiment for February. Economists expect a reading of 77.

U.S. bond markets close at 14:00 ET ahead of Presidents Day.

Corporate earnings

Teck Cominco Ltd. its quarterly earnings on Monday, as does Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust, and Energy Savings Income Fund.

On Tuesday, General Motors Corp. reports. Also reporting are Inmet Mining Corp. and Molson Coors Brewing Co.

Wednesday brings reports from Catalyst Paper Corp., Coca-Cola Co., WestJet Airlines Ltd., and Yellow Pages Income Fund reports fourth-quarter results.

Insurance heavyweights Manulife Financial Corp. and Sun Life Financial Inc. report earnings on Thursday. Other companies scheduled to report include EnCana Corp., George Weston Ltd., Nexen Inc., and Precision Drilling Trust.

On Friday, ARC Energy Trust reports fourth-quarter results, as does Telus Corp.
