On Tuesday, Statistics Canada releases its housing price index for January. A rise of 0.3% is expected.

Separately, StatsCan posts international merchandise trade data for January. A surplus of $2.3-billion is forecast.

On Wednesday, Bank of Canada senior deputy governor Paul Jenkins and deputy governor John Murray appear before Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce to discuss issues dealing with interprovincial barriers to trade.

On Thursday, Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney delivers an address on financial market turbulence, Toronto.

Meanwhile, Statistics Canada reports on the capacity utilization rate for the fourth quarter. Economists expect a rate of 82.1%.

South of the border

On Monday, the U.S. Commerce Department reports on wholesale inventories for January. A rise of 0.5% is expected.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury releases its monthly budget statement for February. A deficit of US$150 billion is expected.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Commerce reports advance retail sales for February. An increase of 0.2% is forecast.

Separately, Commerce reports on business inventories for January. A rise of 0.4% is expected.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Labour reports initial jobless claims for the week ended March 8. Economists forecast 355,000 claims.

On Friday, Labour reports on the consumer price index for February. Economists expect a rise of 0.3% from the previous month in the key measure of inflation.

As well, the University of Michigan issues its preliminary index of consumer sentiment for March. A reading is 70.4 is expected.

Corporate earnings

On Monday, Altus Group Income Fund reports fourth-quarter results, as does Great Canadian Gaming Corp.

Tuesday brings earnings from Empire Co. Ltd.and Savanna Energy Services Corp.

Companies scheduled to report on Wednesday include Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., CHC Helicopter Corp., Petrobank Energy and Resources Ltd., Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Inc., and Teranet Income Fund.

On Thursday, Transcontinental Inc., the parent company of Investment Executive reports its first-quarter results.
