On Tuesday, Statistics Canada releases industrial product and raw material price indexes for November. Economists expect industrial product prices to fall 1% from the previous month and raw materials to drop 9%.
On Friday, StatsCan releases its labour force survey for December. Economists expect the unemployment rate to rise to 6.5% from 6.3% the previous month; job losses are expected at about 22,000.
Separately, StatsCan reports on building permits for November. A month-over-month decline of 5% is forecast.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. reports on housing starts in December. Annualized starts are forecast at 172,500.
South of the border
On Monday, the U.S. Commerce Department reports on construction spending for November. A drop of 1.2% is expected.
Separately, Commerce reports on motor vehicle sales for December. Economists forecast domestic vehicle sales of 7.5 million, and total vehicle sales of 10 million.
On Tuesday, Commerce reports on factory orders in November. Economists expect a 2.2% drop from the previous month.
The U.S. National Association of Realtors reports on pending home sales for November. Sales are expected to have fallen 1%, compared with a 0.7% decrease the previous month.
On Wednesday, the monthly ADP employment report is expected to show the U.S. economy lost about 493,000 private sector jobs in December.
On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Labour reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended Jan. 3. Economists forecast 540,000 claims, up from 492,000 a week earlier. Continuing claims for the week ended Dec. 27 are forecast at 4.46 million.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board releases consumer credit data for November. Economists expect an increase of US$300 million, compared with a decrease of US$3.5 billion the previous month.
On Friday, The U.S. Department of Labour releases employment data for December. Economists expect non-farm payrolls to decline by 495,000, manufacturing payrolls to fall by 100,000, and a jobless rate of 7%, up from 6.7% the previous month. It also reports on the average workweek and hourly earnings.
The U.S. Commerce Department reports wholesale inventories for November. Economists expect a decrease of 0.8% from the previous month.
