On Thursday, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. reports on housing starts in April. Economists expect 230,000 starts, annualized.

On Friday, Statistics Canada releases its labour force survey for April. Economists expect the jobless rate to remain unchanged at 6%, and a net increase of 12,500 jobs.

Separately, StatsCan reports on international merchandise trade in March. Economists expect a surplus of $4.5 billion.

U.S. and overseas

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Labour reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended May 3. Economists are forecasting 375,000 claims.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Commerce Department reports on wholesale inventories for March. A rise of 0.5% is expected.

Overseas, the Bank of England announces its interest rate decision.

On Friday, U.S. Department of Commerce reports on the trade balance for March. Economists expect a deficit of US$61.4 billion.
