The holiday shortened week will end with the release of the Canada and U.S. employment reports for June.

The Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange were closed Monday the Canada Day holiday.

On Tuesday, U.S. fixed-income markets expected to close early for Fourth of July holiday.

Also Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Commerce releases factory orders data for May. Economists forecast a 1% decline, after a 0.3% increase a month earlier.

On Wednesday, U.S. markets are closed for Fourth of July holiday.

Overseas, the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee holds two-day meeting, London.

On Thursday, Statistics Canada releases building permits data for May. Economists expect an increase of 5%, after a decline of 8.4% the previous month.

As well, the Ivey purchasing managers index for June is released. A reading of 61.8 is forecast, down from 62.7 the previous month.

South of the border, the U.S. Department of Labor reports for initial jobless claims for the week ended June 30. Economists forecast 315,000 claims compared with 313,000 in the previous week.

Overseas, the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee makes interest rate announcement, London.

As well, the European Central Bank’s Governing Council meets, followed by interest rate announcement, Frankfurt.

On Friday, Statistics Canada releases its labour force survey for June. Economists expect unemployment to remain unchanged at 6.1%, with an increase of 18,000 jobs, compared with a gain of 9,300 jobs a month earlier.

Also Friday, the U.S. Department of Labor reports on employment in June. Economists expect the jobless rate to remain flat at 4.5%, and an increase in non-farm payrolls of 120,000, compared with 157,000 in the previous month.

On the earnings calendar, Cogeco Inc. and Cogeco Cable Inc. report third-quarter results on Friday.
