Traders will get a reading on the strength of inflation in Canada and the United States this week, as the flood of corporate earnings reports continues.

On Monday, Statistics Canada reports on new motor vehicle sales in May. Economists expect no change from a rise of 6.9% a month earlier.

Separately, StatsCan releases its monthly survey of manufacturing shipments for May. Economists expect a rise of 0.5%.

On Wednesday, StatsCan reports on the consumer price index for June. Economists expect a year-over-year increase of 2.6%, up from 2.2% a month earlier.

Separately, the government agency reports on the leading indicator for June. Economists expect a rise of 0.4%, compared with 0.5% the previous month.

On Thursday, Statistics Canada reports on wholesale trade in May. Economists expect an increase of 0.5%, compared with a decline of 3.1% the previous month.

Separately, StatsCan reports on Canada’s international securities transactions for May. A net inflow of $2 billion is forecast, up from $1.54 billion a month earlier.

South of the border

On Tuesday, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board reports on industrial production in June. Economists expect production to grow 0.5%.

Separately, the Fed reports on capacity utilization in June. Economists expect a utilization rate of 81.6%, a slight gain from 81.3% the previous month.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Labor reports on the producer price index for June. Economists expect a monthly increase of 0.1%, compared with a gain of 0.9% the previous month.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Labour reports on the consumer price index for June. Economists forecast a month-over-month increase of 0.1%, compared with a gain of 0.7% a month earlier.

Corporate earnings

J.P.Morgan Chase, Citigroup, and Merrill Lynch are three U.S. financial services reports scheduled to report quarterly results.
