A flood of U.S. economic data is scheduled for release this week.
North of the border it’s a relatively quiet week in Canada.
On Monday, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. releases The Housing Market Outlook, a quarterly report providing a two-year forecast of housing starts, sales, prices and key economic indicators for the Canadian housing industry.
On Tuesday, Statistics Canada releases data for new motor vehicle sales in June. Economists forecast a drop of 0.3%, compared with a drop of 1% the previous month.
On Wednesday, StatsCan releases its monthly survey of manufacturing shipments for June. Economists expect a decline of 0.4%, compared with a rise of 0.3% a month ago.
On Thursday, StatsCan reports on Canada’s international securities transactions for June. A net inflow of $3 billion is forecast, compared with $5.72 billion the previous month.
As well, the Bank of Canada Review is released.
On Friday, StatsCan releases wholesale trade data for June. Economists expect an increase of 0.4%, compared with a rise of 0.9% the previous month.
South of the border
On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Labor reports on the producer price index for July. Economists expect an increase of 0.3%, compared with an increase of 0.5% a month ago.
Separately, The U.S. National Association of Home Builders releases its housing index for August. Economists expect a reading of 38, down from 39 a month earlier.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Labor reports on the consumer price index for July. Economists forecast a gain of 0.4%, compared with a gain of 0.2% a month ago.
The U.S. Commerce Department releases data on housing starts and building permits for July. Economists forecast 1.81 million starts and 1.84 million permits, both annualized.
The U.S. Federal Reserve Board reports on industrial production in July. Economists expect production to grow 0.5%, compared with a gain of 0.8% the previous month.
The Fed also reports on capacity utilization in July. Economists expect a utilization rate of 82.6%, a slight gain from 82.4% the previous month.
On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Labor reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended Aug. 12. Economists forecast 315,000 new claims, compared with 319,000 a week earlier.
The U.S. Conference Board releases leading indicator figures for July. Economists forecast a rise of 0.1%, unchanged from the previous month.
On Friday, University of Michigan issues its preliminary index of consumer sentiment in August. Economists expect a reading of 84, down from 84.7 the previous month.
