Several Canadian financial services firms are scheduled to release their second-quarter results this week. A report on GDP growth for May tops a short list of Canadian economic releases.

On Tuesday, Statistics Canada releases payroll employment data for May.

On Wednesday, StatsCan releases industrial product and raw materials price indexes for June. Economists expect industrial product price growth of 1%, up from 0.6% in the previous month. The price index for raw materials is forecast to show a 3% gain, off slightly from 3.1% in May.

On Thursday, StatsCan releases gross domestic product figures for May. Economists expect month-over-month growth of 0.2%, compared with 0.4% in April.

South of the border

On Tuesday, the U.S. Conference Board releases its consumer confidence report for July. Economists expect an index reading of 50.0, down from 50.4 in the prior month.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Commerce releases GDP figures for the second quarter. Economists expect annualized growth of 2.0% compared with 1.0% in the prior quarter.

The Chicago purchasing managers’ index for July, one of the most closely watched U.S. manufacturing surveys, is released. Economists expect a reading of 49.0, down from 49.6 in the prior month.

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Labour releases its employment report for July. Economists expect an unemployment rate of 5.6%, up from 5.5% in the previous month. Non-farm payrolls are expected to shrink by 70,000, compared with a decline of 62,000 in June.

The U.S. Department of Commerce releases vehicle sales for July. Economists expect a seasonally adjusted annualized sales rate of 13.9 million vehicles, compared with 13.6 million in June.

Corporate earnings

On Monday, Kraft Foods Inc. reports its second-quarter results, as does Enbridge Energy Partners LP, and Verizon.

Ballard Power Systems reports its second-quarter results on Tuesday, as does RioCan REIT, BP Plc, Canadian Oil Sands Trust, Colgate-Palmolive, Epcor Power LP, George Weston Ltd., and Rogers Communications Inc.

On Wednesday, Moody’s Corp. reports its second-quarter results, as does Office Depot Inc., SNC-Lavalin Group Inc., and West Fraser Timber Co.

Starbucks Corp. reports its third-quarter results, as does Visa Inc.

On Thursday Power Corp. reports its second-quarter results as does its Power Financial Corp. and IGM Financial Inc.

Insurance giant Sun Life Financial reports its Q2 results as does Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd.

Other companies scheduled to relase Q2 results are Barrick Gold Corp.. Brookfield Properties Corp., Cott Corp., Enbridge, Fraser Papers Inc.. Goldcorp Inc., Imperial Oil Ltd., MasterCard Inc., Motorola Inc., Royal Dutch Shell Plc, and Torstar.

On Friday, Chevron reports its second-quarter results, as does Eldorado Gold Corp., Nortel Networks Corp., and NYSE Euronext Inc.
