On Monday, Statistics Canada releases the new-housing price index for November.

Meanwhile, the Expert Panel on Securities Regulation, will release its report. The committee is expected to recommend that the provinces cede their authority to regulate the buying and selling of securities to the federal government.

On Tuesday, StatsCan reports on international merchandise trade for November. Economists expect a surplus of $3.3 billion.

U.S. and overseas

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Commerce reports on the trade balance for November. Economists forecast the trade deficit narrowing to US$51 billion from $57.2 billion in October.

Separately, the U.S. Treasury releases its monthly budget statement for December. Economists expect a deficit of US$50 billion.

On Wednesday, U.S. Commerce reports advance retail sales for December. Economists expect a drop of 1.2% is expected.

Separately, Commerce reports on business inventories for November. Economists expect a drop of 0.5%.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Labour reports on the producer price index in December. Economists expect a 2% drop from the previous month.

Separately, Labour reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended Jan. 10. Economists forecast 520,000 claims, up from 467,000 a week earlier.

Overseas, the European Central Bank’s governing council meets in Frankfurt and issues its interest rate announcement.

On Friday, U.S. Labour reports on the consumer price index for December. Economists expect a decrease of 0.9% from the previous month, and a 0.1% drop from the same month last year.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board reports on industrial production and capacity utilization in December. Economists expect industrial production to fall 0.9%, and the capacity utilization rate to come in at 74.6%.
