Bank of Montreal kicks off the third-quarter earnings season for Canada’s banks on Tuesday.
CIBC follows with its earnings report slated for Wednesday. TD Bank and National Bank of Canada are scheduled for Thursday, with Royal Bank of Canada and Laurentian Bank of Canada following suit Friday. The Bank of Nova Scotia is the last bank to report, on Aug. 29.
Both TD Bank and CIBC will be taking Enron-related charges in the quarter. TD will absorb a $238 million after-tax charge this quarter, while CIBC is taking a $2.5 billion after-tax charge to cover its legal bills.
Other Canadian companies reporting quarterly results in the coming week include Bombardier Inc. and Mosaid Technologies Inc.
On the economic calendar, Statistics Canada releases retail sales figures for June on Monday. Economists expect an increase of 1.3%.
Sales excluding autos are seen rising 0.6%.
On Tuesday, StatsCan releases leading indicators for July. Economists expect a rise of 0.3%. Separately, the government agency also issues Employment Insurance data for June.
On Thursday, StatsCan releases employment, earnings and hours data for June. Economists expect average weekly earnings to increase 2.7% year over year.
Also on Thursday, StatsCan releases quarterly financial statistics for enterprises and farm cash receipts, both for the second quarter.
On Friday, the government agency releases consumer price index data for July, with economists forecasting a 2.1% increase in the headline number.
Excluding the eight most volatile items in the index, prices are expected to have climbed 1.5% in July.
South of the border, he U.S. National Association of Realtors issues existing home sales figures for July will be released Tuesday . Annualized sales of 7.24 million units are expected.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Commerce releases durable goods orders figures for July. Economists expect a decline of 1.5%.
Separately, Commerce issues new home sales data for July. Annualized sales of 1.27 million units is expected.
On Thursday, the U.S. Labor Department releases initial jobless claims data for the week ending Aug. 20. Economists expect 313,000 claims.
On Friday, the University of Michigan releases its revised index of consumer sentiment for August. Economists expect a reading of 92.7.
As well, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan will be the focus of investor attention. He speaks at the Kansas City Fed Conference in Jackson Hole.
