Statistics Canada kicks off the flow of economic news on Monday with a report on Canada’s international securities transactions for June. A net inflow of $5.5 billion is forecast.

After markets close, the Ontario Court of Appeal will release its much-awaited decision on the proposed restructuring of the $32 billion third-party asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP) market.

On Tuesday, Statistics Canada releases wholesale sales figures for June. A 0.5% increase is forecast.

On Wednesday, StatsCan announces retail sales figures for June. Economists expect a 0.4% increase from the previous month. Excluding automobiles, an increase of 0.6% is forecast.

Separately, StatsCan reports on the leading indicators for July. Economists forecast an increase of 0.1%.

On Thursday, StatsCan reports on the consumer price index in July. Economists expect a 3.4% increase from the same month last year.

South of the border

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Labour releases its producer price index for July. Economists expect an increase of 0.5% from the previous month, and a yearly increase of 9.4%.

The U.S. Commerce Department releases housing starts and building permits figures for July. Economists forecast 960,000 starts and 970,000 permits, both annualized.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Labour reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended Aug. 16. Economists forecast 445,000 claims.

On Friday, the U.S. Conference Board reports on the leading indicators in July. Economists expect a drop of 0.2%.

Corporate earnings

On Monday, Mega Brands Inc. releases second-quarter results, while BHP Billiton Ltd. and Newcrest Mining Ltd. release full-year financial results.

On Tuesday, Corby Distilleries Ltd. releases fourth-quarter results, as does Open Text Corp.

Home Depot Inc. reports on its second quarter, as does Novatel Wireless, Saks Inc., and Target Corp.

Hewlett-Packard Co. reports on its third quarter.

La-Z-Boy Inc. releases first-quarter results.

On Thursday, Gap Inc. reports second quarter results, as does, Barnes & Noble Inc., and Foot Locker Inc.

Hormel Foods Corp. releases third-quarter results.
