(February 23) – The Conference Board of Canada says the country is facing its best international economic environment in years.
Year 2000 “may be the best of all worlds,” says a new report from the Conference Board. It notes that the Asian crisis is a memory, and there are signs of recovery in Japan. Europe is ticking up, after a Euro-inspired slowdown.
The most important region for Canada remains the U.S. “Gains in U.S. gross domestic product and employment continue to exceed virtually all expectations,” it says. “Each new productivity report confounds forecasters and policy-makers.” Despite this, inflation remains in check.
On balance the report sees employment and income gains for all Canadians, eventually joined by a stronger dollar.
