Toronto stocks ended higher Thursday, as the materials sector boosted a market that was little moved on the session.
The S&P/TSX composite index gained 19.02 points, or 0.14%, to 14,079.41, after spending much of the session in negative territory.
Six of the 10 TSX main sub-groups moved up.
The materials index gained 0.78%, while the gold sub-index moved up 0.18%.
The August contract lost $4.80 to $650.60 an ounce.
Lionore Minerals added 1¢, or 0.04%, to $27.44.
The energy index advanced 0.12%.
Petro-Canada gained 46¢, or 0.81%, to $57.16.
Light, sweet crude moved up 40¢ at US$71.81 a barrel.
The telecommunications sector fell 0.68%.
BCE Inc. gained 26¢, or 0.63%, to $41.58.
The S&P/TSX Venture composite index rose 17.46 points, or 0.54%, to 3,225.01.
The Canadian dollar rose 0.17 of a cent to US94.63¢.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 11.46 points, or 0.08%, to 13,565.84, the Nasdaq composite index gained 11.70, or 0.44%, to 2,656.65, and the S&P 500 edged ahead 0.53. or 0.03%, to 1,525.40.
