Toronto stocks rebounded Monday from last week’s big selloff as firming metal prices lifted materials issues.

The S&P/TSX composite index closed up 116.19 points, or 0.8%, at 13,864.72 after dropping 5.7% last week.

Eight of the 10 main TSX groups marched ahead.

The materials sector recovered nearly half its losses from last week. It jumped 3.1% as most base metals, including copper, tin and zinc, firmed on commodities exchanges.

Gold meanwhile rebounded as the U.S. dollar weakened. The August bullion contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose $4 to US$664.10, boosting Barrick Gold up $1.67, or 4.9%, at $35.56.

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, which reported a higher quarterly profit last week, jumped $4.21, or 5.1%, to $86.71.

Uranium producer Cameco meanwhile sank 15¢, or 0.4%, to $42.85 after it said on Monday its second quarter jumped 37%, but fell short of expectations.

Information technology issues were up 1.1%, while telecoms gained 1.2%. Resarch in Motion added $6.43, or 2.8%, to $235.28.

The financial group, which represents about one-third of the overall index, logged its fifth loss in six sessions, falling 0.2%.

Banks were the five biggest weighted losers on Monday, led by Royal Bank of Canada, down 61¢, or 0.9%, at $68.85.

The September crude oil contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange slid 19¢ to US$76.83 a barrel.

The junior S&P/TSX Venture composite index moved up 16.71 points to 3,179.96.

The Canadian dollar was down 0.58 of a cent to US93.60¢.

A report from Statistics Canada said the industrial product price index fell 1.3 per cent in June on lower prices for primary metal products, petroleum, coal and motor vehicles. The consensus forecasts called for a 0.5 per cent decline, according to TD Economics.

The raw materials price index rose 0.6 per cent, against a consensus forecast for a 0.5 per cent drop.

In New York U.S. stocks rebounded on Monday after a global equity sell-off last week, as optimism about earnings resurfaced and concern about credit conditions eased.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 92.84 points, or 0.70%, to end at 13,358.31. The S&P 500 Index rose 14.96 points, or 1.03%, to 1,473.91. The Nasdaq composite index climbed 21.04 points, or 0.82%, to 2,583.28.
