One Liberty Plaza, a building adjacent to the World Trade Center and home to numerous financial firms, is not in peril.
One Liberty is owned by Canada’s Brookfield Properties. Brookfield’s president and CEO Bruce Flatt says, “Despite media reports to the contrary, One Liberty Plaza has suffered no structural damage.”
It had been reported that One Liberty was near collapse as other surrounding building have collapsed following in the felling of the Twin Towers. Brookfield also owns three of the four towers in the nearby World Financial Center, which was also damaged.
Flatt says, “Although each of the buildings will require work such as window and lobby repairs, none of the damage renders the buildings inoperable. We will comment further on our plans once we have gained more information. On behalf of the entire Brookfield team, our hearts go out to all the families who have lost loved ones as a result of this terrible tragedy.”
“Our first priority remains helping our employees and tenants deal with these tragic events. We have established communication channels to keep them up to date with information, as it becomes available. We are already well set up with temporary administrative offices in a new location in New York,” Flatt adds.
Nasdaq moved its headquarters to One Liberty recently. It says, “At present, we have no evidence that the building will collapse, but want to provide some perspective on what such an event would mean. While unfortunate, a collapse would have no impact on the reopening of Nasdaq, when the U.S. markets open in the next several days.”
Nasdaq confirms that primary and backup data centers are located outside of New York City, and the ability to operate the Nasdaq market would be unaffected by the loss of the building.
One Liberty Plaza housed approximately 127 Nasdaq employees, primarily headquarters staff, who were safely evaluated on Tuesday morning. Nasdaq has identified space to relocate displaced employees at various other existing Nasdaq facilities, if necessary.
Bank of Nova Scotia had 250 employees at One Liberty, which it says were evacuated safely. It has now moved into backup operations.
