Toronto stocks closed lower in light trading Friday, one of last vacation days for many market participants. Activity on the exchanges is expected to pick up once trading resumes on Tuesday.

Although the Toronto Stock Exchange S&P/TSX composite index traded higher throughout the day, it closed lower at 7,510.32, down 6.63 from Thursday’s close. The TSX Venture Exchange ended at 1,316.90, up 11.81 points from 1,305.09 on Thursday.

In New York, U.S. stocks ended higher in light trading, to mark the third straight week of gains for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 41.61 points to 9,415.82, Standard & Poor’s 500 Index added 5.16 points to close at 1,008.00, and the Nasdaq Composite Index gained 10.40 points to 1,810.58.

Canadian and U.S. stock markets are closed Monday for the Labour Day holiday.
