Toronto stocks ended flat on Monday after a choppy session driven by movements in oil prices. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 7.73 points, or 0.08%, at 9,630.90.

Seven of the 10 TSX main groups were higher.

The energy sector rose 0.14%, supported by new peaks for oil, which topped US$58 a barrel on Monday. But profit-taking late in the day pushed it back to settle at US$57.01, off 26¢, in New York.

Also higher were the industrials, telecoms, utilities and consumer discretionary and staples sectors.

Industrials rose 0.53% as Bombardier Inc. shares rose 9¢, or 3.47%, to $2.68. The company today announced it had received a $637 million order for 20 CRJ700 regional jets from SkyWest Airlines.

Weaknesses in the financials, tech and materials groups were sufficient to keep the overall index slightly lower.

The financial group fell 0.38%, paced by weakness in most big banks and insurers. Manulife Financial fell 70¢, or 1.23%, to $56.20 while Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce slid 42¢, or 0.57%, to $73.38.

The tech sector fell 0.48% with Nortel Networks down 3¢, or 0.91%, at $3.27.

Mosaid Technologies sagged $5.54, or 20%, to $22.60 after a U.S. court ruled in a pretrial hearing that Infineon Technologies AG products did not infringe on six Mosaid patents.

The materials group fell 0.38% as its component gold mining issues fell 1.51% as gold prices slipped to a seven-week low.

The junior S&P/TSX Venture composite index fell 18.23 points, or 0.96%, to end at 1,886.28.

In New York, U.S. stocks ended higher on Monday as crude oil retreated from record highs, while a surge of almost 5% in shares of insurer American International Group Inc. boosted the Dow.

AIG climbed after New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said he expects to reach a “civil resolution” with the insurer, calming fears that his investigation could lead to criminal charges against the company. Its stock rose $2.35 to $53.30.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 16.84 points, or 0.16%, to close at 10,421.14. The S&P 500 gained 3.20 points, or 0.27%, to end at 1,176.12. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index gained 6.26 points, or 0.32%, to 1,991.07.
