Toronto stocks ended higher Monday after a lightly traded session. The S&P/TSX composite index rose 6.68 points, or 0.07%, to 9,063.84
U.S. markets were closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Seven of the 10 main TSX groups finished with slight gains..
Energy stocks kept the TSX in the black. Higher oil prices in Europe led the energy group to a 0.64% gain.
Among energy issues, Talisman Energy rose 50¢, or 1.4%, to $36.00, while Petro-Canada gained 91¢, or 1.5%, to $61.21.
Healthcare stocks rose 0.7%.
Meanwhile Alcan was a drag on the materials group, which slipped 0.75%.
The aluminum maker issued a profit warning late Friday. Alcan shares dropped $3.05, or 6%, to $48.25, while its spin-off Novelis fell $2.27, or 7.7%, to $26.87.
The junior S&P/TSX Venture composite index advanced 5.48 points, or 0.31%, to end at 1,797.60.
The economic calender is light tomorrow morning. Statistics Canada is releasing the composite index of leading indicators for December.
However, investors will be paying attention the heavy flow of U.S. corporate earnings reports.
