Conservative leader Stephen Harper yesterday explained how Conservative tax proposals would benefit the middle class.
In a news release, the Conservative party outlined its plan for Canada’s middle class tax relief. The Conservatives pledge to:
- Reduce personal income taxes by gradually raising the tax brackets and phasing out the lower-middle bracket.
· Introduce a credit of $2,000 per child to reduce the tax burden on families with children; - Return the annual Employment Insurance surplus to Canadians by reducing EI premiums;
- Help low and fixed income Canadians with higher prices through an enhanced GST tax credit.
The plan would bite deeply into government revenues, starting with $1.1 billion in the first year and rising to $16.4 billion by the last year.
“We believe that these tax cuts are reasonable, moderate, and affordable. They will not give us lower personal taxes than the United States, but they do set us on a course to lower, more competitive taxes,” said Harper.
