It’s a quiet week for Canadian economic data with Canadian markets closed Monday to observe Thanksgiving.
On Thursday, Statistics Canada reports on the consumer price index for September. Economists expect a rise of 5% from a year earlier; core CPI is forecast at 2.5% higher.
Separately, StatsCan posts manufacturing shipments for August. Economists expect a decrease of 0.57%.
South of the border
On Monday, U.S. fixed-income markets closed to observe Columbus Day.
On Wednesday, U.S. Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke addresses the Economic Club of New York.
Separately, the Federal Reserve releases its periodic Beige Book survey of U.S. economic conditions.
The U.S. Department of Labour reports on the producer price index in September. Economists expect a monthly drop of 0.3% and a year-over-year increase of 8.7%.
The U.S. Department of Commerce reports advance retail sales for September. Economists expect a drop of 0.4%.
Also, Commerce reports on business inventories for August. Economists expect a rise of 0.4%.
Overseas, OPEC release its monthly oil market report.
On Thursday, The U.S. Department of Labour reports on U.S. initial jobless claims for the week ended Oct. 11. Economists expect a drop to 475,000 claims.
Separately, the Federal Reserve Board reports on industrial production and capacity utilization in September. Industrial production is forecast to decline 0.8%, and a capacity utilization rate of 78% is forecast.
On Friday, the U.S. Commerce Department reports on housing starts and building permits in September. Economists forecast 880,000 starts and 840,000 permits, both annualized.
The University of Michigan issues its index of consumer sentiment for October. Economists expect a reading of 69, down from 70.3 in September.

CSX Corp. reports its third-quarter earnings, as does Intel Corp., Johnson & Johnson, and PepsiCo Inc.
