The Toronto Stock Exchange 300 composite index ended 2001 on a positive note, up 13.44 points on Monday to close at 7,688.41.However, that was hardly enough to erase the 13.9% fall for the year.

In comparison the Dow Jones industrial average was a star losing 7.1% over the year. It lost 115.42 points on Monday, closing at 10,021.57.

The S&P 500 slipped 12.93 points Monday closing at 1,148.09, down 13.04% for the year.

The Nasdaq composite index fell a whopping 21% in 2001. On Monday, the Nasdaq edged down 36.86 points at 1,950.40.

The Canadian dollar ended a dismal year that saw it slide 6%. The loonie finished 2001 at US62.78¢.
